Did you know that one key source of information for jewelry theft investigators comes from a global database of diamond information that GIA started in the 1980s?  The database contains the grading details and inscription numbers of every diamond GIA has examined, and has proven valuable to investigators, who frequently turn to GIA for assistance in recovering stolen diamonds. One New York FBI office field agent stated that “literally hundreds and hundreds of stones have been recovered because of it.”
