Spring Auctions Showcase Part 2: Fancy Shaped Diamond Necklaces
Earlier this week, we discussed fancy colored diamonds making an appearance at auction houses this season; however, today we would like to highlight fancy shaped diamonds. The most common diamond shape is round, with all other shapes referred to as “fancy.” These include marquise, pear, oval, rectangular, and a variety of others gaining popularity, such as triangle.
One such example of how fancy shapes can really create a statement piece of jewelry was seen on April 16, 2013, when Christie’s New York auctioned a diamond necklace by William Goldberg. Christie’s describes the piece as being “designed as a two-row swag of Ashoka [brand name for a round-cornered rectangular modified brilliant cut], cushion, marquise, circular, pear, rectangular, oval, and heart-shaped diamonds, each within a circular-cut diamond surround…[and] mounted in platinum.” It sold for $363,750, despite an estimated value of $300,000 to $500,000.
GIA quality analysis: 48 of the diamonds were graded by GIA. They weigh approximately 0.73 to 2.08 carats; color ranges from G to I; and the clarity ranges from Internally Flawless to SI2.
On April 8, 2013 in Hong Kong, Sotheby’s auctioned a “Fancy Coloured Diamond and Diamond Necklace” composed of 29 graduated heart-shaped diamonds of various colors, framed and spaced with circular-cut colorless diamonds. The platinum, 18k white and pink gold necklace sold for approximately $654,405.00, slightly higher than its estimated value of $541,044 to $644,100.
GIA quality analysis: The 29 heart-shape diamonds individually graded by GIA weigh a total of 22.89 carats and the circular-cut diamonds add approximately 6.20 carats.
